Why would a robot need an internal heads-up display? For that matter, the Pinocchio problem, revisited in Spielberg's AI: would a little replicant necessarily want to be a "real boy"? We shape ourselves by thinking. Emotions are reactions, as are many of our own actions: reaction to what brushes against us in life. These are not defining characteristics; what drives them from within are.
