Kevin Slavin's Mobile-Monday talk "Reality is Enough" is germane here—at least his critique of the Terminator's-eye perspective shots in Terminator (which show a kind of video-screen view with heads-up display). Why would a robot need an internal heads-up display? For that matter, the Pinocchio problem, revisited in Spielberg's AI: would a little replicant necessarily want to be a "real boy"? Might it not instead want to grow up to be a network?

I hacked that up a bit to make it succinct.

While Coleridge was talking about forms in poetry, this applies to people, as well. We shape ourselves by thinking. Emotions are reactions, as are many of our own actions: reaction to what brushes against us in life. These are not defining characteristics; what drives them from within are. That you *think* is compelling, attractive, and it's not a wonder that people find you so.

When I see myself on my webcam, it suggests a badly genetically modified potato spliced with my face, with hanging.

the closest experience to such a 'mindbender' was when I first got acquainted with the Internet (pre-web) around 1990.
I was aware of the teletype (there was one such machines at the my dad's job)
email was kind of DUH, but IRC, Gopher and FTP were a revelation.
but suddenly becoming able to connect instantly with any person in the world, and retrieving any document published on it?
a little while later I learnt of this new thing called "The World Wide Web" and I found a way in which my personal computer (at home!) could share documents and pictures with great ease of use for anyone on the Internet.

that was my "Felix moment" which spanned the course of about 3 years.
